Semax – Research Peptide
Semax is a synthetic heptapeptide (Met-Glu-His-Phe-Pro-Gly-Pro) derived from the adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) fragment 4-10, developed at the Institute of Molecular Genetics of the Russian Academy of Sciences. The C-terminal Pro-Gly-Pro extension enhances metabolic stability compared to the native ACTH fragment.
Research Context
Research has demonstrated Semax’s capacity to upregulate Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF) and its TrkB receptor in the hippocampus and frontal cortex, enhance dopaminergic and serotonergic neurotransmission, and provide neuroprotection under oxidative stress conditions. It has been investigated in models of stroke recovery, cognitive impairment, and traumatic brain injury.
